Want a More Powerful Golf Swing? A Real-Life Lesson
April 18, 2007
If you want more POWER – and I’m not just talking about hitting longer shots – this real-life lesson story is for YOU!
I was working with a woman who wanted more power in her swing. She takes lessons with her husband and this was their 4th lesson in a series of 5.
I could see that she was releasing the club early – i.e. straightening the angle between her front arm and club well before impact (the angle that was created in her backswing).
I briefly explained the concept of “release,” and how release can affect the power in a golf swing. Then, I asked her to swing into the I-Swing Coach training bag so she could experiment releasing the club different ways.
My goal was to help her EXPERIENCE the release that gave her the most power. Once she could FEEL the perfect release for herself, she could TRUST that it was the most powerful release for her body, and KNOW exactly what to practice.
Using the I-Swing Coach swing training bag, she discovered her ideal release within minutes because she could immediately HEAR and FEEL which swing was most powerful.
Once she knew the FEELING of her most powerful release, then it was time to get that swing to show up when hitting a golf ball. This is where practice comes in.
We started the process of going from the bag to the ball. She could easily swing into the I-Swing Coach with her perfect release. However, after 5-10 minutes, neither of us were satisfied with her progress taking her bag swing to the ball.
I could sense there was a hidden thought that we needed to uncover – a thought that was in direct opposition to her new swing. So, I asked her to slow down her swing so she could become even more aware of the difference between her new powerful-releasing bag swing and her old ”early-release” swing.
That’s when she found the culprit! She had just made another beautiful, powerful swing into the I-Swing Coach, when she stood up, looked straight at me and said, “But, that’s a flat swing!”
BREAKTHROUGH! She had uncovered the thought that had been keeping her old swing in place. To her, the powerful bag swing was a flat swing, and apparently, she had been led to believe that a flat swing was bad.
Personally, I don’t judge swings as “upright” or “flat” any more. She made a powerful, effortless swing that arrived perfectly at impact, so regardless of whether she called it upright or flat, I loved it (it was actually right between the two to me).
So, there we were. I was thrilled we’d found the culprit that was holding her back, and she was standing there staring at me, trying to make sense of her confusing discovery. How could a “bad swing” feel so good?
After some discussion about ideal impact and about finding her body’s easiest, most comfortable, and most powerful way to swing, her confusion cleared and a new belief was born … “If my body’s most powerful way to swing is a flat swing, then a flat swing MUST BE GOOD!
Since then, she’s learned to trust herself more and more. And, you can too!
The Moral of this Story – Trust yourself to know what feels best for YOUR BODY. As long as your club ends up in the ideal position at impact, you’re guaranteed to get the results you want, so why not have a golf swing that feels GREAT!
It’s your golf swing. You are the only one who knows what feels best to your body, so you have the POWER. Trust YOURSELF!
Put your own feelings above all the swing advice you hear or read. If your body’s best way to reach ideal impact is similar to a way of swinging that you’ve been told is “bad,” you either misinterpeted the advice, or it was simply never right for YOU!
