Have You Been Acting Crazy?

April 23, 2007

Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.”

If that’s true, then Albert Einstein would consider the way you’ve been approaching golf swing improvement absolutely crazy.

Let’s take a closer look …

1.  The Hook – You start with a swing tip or piece of swing advice that you’ve heard or read is the “right way” to swing.  You don’t completely trust that it will work (because of all the swing tips you’ve tried before that didn’t work), but you decide to “give it a try” while remaining skeptical.

2.  The Test – You give it a try, still having no solid way of knowing whether it will work or not.  If it doesn’t work right away, that’s easy;  you mentally stamp it as “swing advice that doesn’t work” and move onto the next idea.

3.  The Attachment – If you happen to hit a good shot while thinking about the tip, then it must be a “good tip” and you give it all the credit.  “Hallejulah.  By Jove, I’ve got it.  I finally found the secret I’ve been searching for all along.  I finally found the missing link in my swing!”  Happiness and joy abound.  You celebrate your good fortune and your tip is proudly positioned in the forefront of your mind.

4.  The Rejection – Then, all too soon, reality strikes.  Even while thinking about your new tip, you start hitting some bad shots.  “How could that be?”  It turns out your swing tip wasn’t everything you’d hoped for after all.  You think about the tip more and more, but the magic is gone.  That tip must not have been the missing link.

5.  The Insanity – Alas, hope springs eternal.  The search must go on.  ”There’s got to be a secret; a missing link that I haven’t found.  Luckily, the latest issues of all the major golf magazines will be arriving soon.  In the meantime, I can join that golf tip website I saw online, and order a copy of that hot, new swing book I just heard about on TV.”
